A Whole New Blue?

The new season brings high expectations, and the Blue Bum is back to making paintings. Here is the first:

The End of the Road

End of the season, October 3, 2012Bang the drum slowly for another Dodger season. Now the long wait ’til next year. It was fun the first half, being at the top of the Major League food chain for, well, it seemed like forever. The southpaw, Clayton Kershaw, started out a little rocky, but he eventually found his way. Matt Kemp started the year like the MVP we all know he should be, then injuries plagued him. There were nice surprises in the infield, like Mark Ellis and Luis Cruuuuuuuz. But the boffo moves made mid-season seemed to put the kibosh on the chemistry, and no amount of bobbleheads could get some people to buy a ticket for a seamstitch, leaving the stadium eerily half-full much of the time. Anyway, we need to start looking forward, and not back. Something for the owners to keep in mind in their sophomore year: Dodger fans like likable players. Sure, they still have to hit, but they don’t have to cost an arm and a leg. Case in point, the awesome catcher A.J. Ellis. It took him a long time to be the Dodgers catcher, he did a great job, and he should still be here come April. Period. Same with second baseman Mark Ellis. Reliable and solid (that base-running blunder Tuesday was not the reason the team didn’t make the playoffs). And the aforementioned Cinderella story third baseman Luis Cruuuuuuuuz! (It can only be spelled with numerous U’s.) His ability, personality and attitude are the epitome of Dodger spirit. He is a joyous surprise, and we want him to stick around. See you next year, with new paintings and great expectations!

We’re Not Dead Yet!

Boy, the Dodgers are proving that Yogi Berra was right: It ain’t over ’til it’s over! The team is like that corpse on “Castle” that suddenly sits up when they wheel it into the morgue. They are finally playing like it means something and like it’s fun, too. That’s what we’ve been waiting for as fans. And what can you say about a certain third-baseman, except: CRUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUZ! Love that guy. I hope they keep him around for next year. Go Dodgers!!!

Hanging On for Dear Life

The Dodgers’ post-season hopes have been declared dead time after time in the past few weeks. Here on this blog, on the radio, on TV, in the newspaper…pretty much everyone agrees, with a three-game deficit and six to play, it’s unlikely that the Blue Crew will go on to any playoffs or “tiebreaker-games.” But still the ghost of a chance haunts us Dodger fans’ dreams. I hope it happens. I really do. But I won’t hold my breath.

Nine Games Left

The Dodgers are 3½ games behind the St. Louis Cardinals in the second wild card race with nine games left to play. Statistically, there’s still a chance. Realistically, it’s time to look forward to next year.

Agony and Ecstasy

It’s nearly over. Somehow, we only have five more wins than losses and we’re still barely in the hunt for that second wild card. But these last couple of wins have been tough ones. Barely hanging on, blowing a six-run lead before scraping out one more and winning in Washington. It’s almost hard to watch a game now. It hurts to see Hanley Ramirez strike out one more time. It’s agony to witness poor John Ely called in to a tight game and giving away homers like their hooker ads in Vegas. Walk-off wins are fun, but confident playing from the first inning and hitting with men in scoring position is what wins pennants.

Where’s a Miracle When You Need One?

That might be all that can save the Dodgers’ chances this year. They are lifeless and uninspired. They must be very frustrated, and I feel for them, but c’mon! Since we went for the “big bats,” we’ve gotten nothing but bad baseball. There’s the occasional bright spot, usually sparked by the remarkable Luis Cruz. I think I’d rather watch Elian Herrera and Dee Gordon try really hard and fail than see Hanley Ramirez and Adrian Gonzalez rest on their past laurels and let games get away.
